How to Ground Yourself Energetically

What is grounding?  It’s when you connect physically or energetically to the earth, matching the earth’s natural rhythm.  It’s also when you discharge extra electrons from your body into the ground.

Why do it?  It’s the perfect way to prepare your body and mind for meditation, as well as for any stressful situation when you need to be present and think clearly.  It’s an easy, calming way to start and end your day.  Some science indicates that it even has an anti-inflammatory effect.

When to do it?  Upon waking, before any high-stress event, before going into a crowded place, before going to sleep, and whenever you feel a little bit off.

How do I do this?  There are so many ways!  Physically, you can go outside and walk or stand in the grass barefoot.  Getting into a body of water is perfect, and even just taking a bath or shower can be helpful.  Energetically, I use a technique which is an adaptation of the grounding process developed by Shakti Gawain, noted intuitive and author:

Sit in a chair or on the floor with your back straight.

Take a moment to imagine a glowing ball of energy in your belly, about the size of a soccer ball.

Now send that ball of energy down through the chair, through the floor, and deep into the earth.  Imagine it going all the way to the center of the earth.  Then imagine this shaft of energy spreading out and growing roots, like a tree.   This is your grounding cord

Next, imagine the energy of the earth traveling up through your grounding cord, and up through your feet if you’re sitting in a chair, up into and throughout your body, and flowing out through the top of your head, like a fountain.  Stay with that image for a moment, imagining the sparkling energy flowing easily throughout your whole body, then out through the top of your head and flowing gently around you.

Now imagine the energy of the cosmos flowing in through the top of your head, and throughout your body, mixing and circulating harmoniously in your body, and then exiting through your grounding cord.  You may wish to call in the energy, love and wisdom of your guides, masters and teachers as well.  Stay with this image for a moment, just long enough to notice your feeling of groundedness. That’s it!

With just a little bit of practice, this will come very naturally, and you’ll be able to easily ground yourself within the space of one or two breaths.
